The National Trust and particularly the Holnicote Estate in Exmoor are very pleased to welcome the Samworth Brothers Charity Challenge 2019.
The Holnicote Estate is one of the largest properties that is owned and managed by the National Trust. Situated within Exmoor National Park it covers an area of approximately 20sq miles and includes some of the most iconic landscape and important wildlife habitats in the UK such as the Dunkery & Horner Woods National Nature Reserve.
Horner Woods is one of the largest Atlantic Oakwood‘s, in the UK. These are found in areas that have a damp, humid climate with high rainfall and virtually no air pollution. They are characterized by the species that live there especially the abundance of lower plants such as fungi, ferns, mosses, liverworts and lichens. In the UK these woods are recognised as Britain’s ‘temperate rainforest’.
As well as the wonderful landscape, wildlife and habitats Holnicote has some wonderful buildings and historical heritage including 170 cottages and 14 farms, many of which date from the 14th and 15th century.
Exmoor and the Quantocks are two of the best locations in the UK for mountain biking and trail running. Holnicote alone has an extensive ‘rights of way’ network totalling more than 250km, so there are plenty of opportunities to get out and explore this fantastic area.
